Whenever I’m lucky enough to have a window seat while flying in or out of Montreal, I am always entranced when I gaze upon the landscape below. One of the sights that fascinates me most as the aircraft climbs from Trudeau Airport or descends for a landing is how many backyard swimming pools there are in the greater Montreal area. There are a lot of them and this amazes me because we live in a cold climate. The outdoor swimming season is short: three months, four for truly hardy souls.
I used to wonder, given the brevity of summer, why so many homeowners are willing to shoulder the expense of building a swimming pool, let alone the responsibility of maintaining it. But I have come to realize that it is because the warm season is so short that we want to make the most of it and we’re willing to spend money on things that will allow us to do that. We create decks and patios for alfresco dining. We plant and tend gardens. And we build pools.
